From the embellished blazer that helped put Khanum’s on the map to a new black velvet statement for party season: the story behind our latest Mohini piece.
Some pieces are more than a new addition to a collection. They carry the story of where a brand began. When I first started Khanum’s, I started with an embellished blazer. It quickly became a favourite. Influencers and celebrities loved it, customers loved it, and it helped put the brand on the map. More than that, it helped me build the notoriety and customer following that gave Khanum’s its start. I had recognised a gap in the market for intricately embellished statement styles that women could buy at a considered price and keep in their wardrobes as investment pieces. I wanted to make something that felt special and distinctive, but still wearable: the kind of piece you could bring out for an occasion and feel brilliant in every time.
Then lockdown changed everything. With nowhere to go, customers needed more from their wardrobes than occasionwear and statement pieces. That shift had a knock-on effect on the business, and it became clear that Khanum’s needed to evolve. I began exploring other silhouettes, especially dresses, and bringing embellishment into them in new ways. Pearl trims and considered decorative details began to appear across our dresses. Over time, those embellished dresses became a signature for Khanum’s. We built a community of women who loved the detail and were happy to invest in pieces that felt special, but could still be worn and enjoyed again.
So, after such a long time, why bring the embellished blazer back? Because we know that customer is still here. She loves a statement, she values the detail, and she wants pieces with presence. Returning to the blazer felt like a natural next chapter, and Mohini was the perfect home for it. The new black velvet blazer is adorned with diamantes, pearls and bugle beads. The velvet gives the piece depth; the embellishment catches the light. It is bold, but the design is versatile enough to make it your own.
We created it with party season in mind: an easy way to make an entrance with a jacket as the main event. Wear it on its own for that just-the-jacket look, or style it with the black velvet mermaid skirt designed to pair with it. It works just as well with jeans or trousers, and you can layer it over a T-shirt to make the embellishment feel more relaxed. That versatility is part of the point. I want this to be the kind of jacket you reach for when you want to feel amazing, whatever the occasion or how you choose to wear it. The kind of piece that turns heads as you walk into a room, and brings that inevitable question: “Where did you get that jacket?”
For me, this blazer connects Khanum’s beginnings to the brand we’ve become. The original idea was to create intricately embellished pieces women could invest in and treasure. We’ve explored that idea through different silhouettes, made it our own through embellished dresses, and now we’re returning to the piece that started it all - with a new perspective and a new place in the story.
A little sparkle. A lot of history. And the feeling of walking into a room like you belong there.
